On October 18th, the 6th Khachaturian International Festival kicked off. During the upcoming month, various works of Aram Khachaturian will be presented through 9 concert evenings; from piano concerts for children to large-scale works.
The Armenian State Symphony Orchestra's Artistic director and chief conductor Sergey Smbatyan highlighted that during the festival not only Khachaturian's well-known and loved works, but also other, rarely performed works will be presented. As Smbatyan informed, world renowned soloists will come to Armenia to perform Khachaturian's music.
''Aram Khachaturian is one of our greatest heroes and both, for the orchestra and for me it is the greatest honor and responsibility to present a festival that carries the composer's name,'' Smbatyan mentioned.
The Festival started with the project ''Khachaturian and Jazz,'' in the frames of which the Armenia State Symphony and Armenia State Jazz Orchestras performed the jazz interpretations of Khachaturian's works.
During the concert the following music pieces were performed; ''Dance of the Rose Maidens'' from ''Gayane'' ballet, the Anthem of the Soviet Armenia, ''the Lullaby'' from ''Gayane'' ballet, Variations of Aegina and the feast scene from “Spartacus” ballet, ''Andantino'', Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia from ''Spartacus'' ballet, Lezginka, ''Sabre dance'', etc.. Jazz interpretations were performed by Vahagn Hayrapetyan, Armen Hyusnunts, Martin Ulikhanyan and Andranik Berberyan. Sergey Smbatyan and Armen Hyusnunts were conducting the concert.
Musicians involved in the project ''Khachaturian and Jazz'' mention that Khachaturian's music provides space for creativity.
Pianist Vahagn Hayrapetyan, who also performed the jazz interpretation of the Soviet Armenia’s anthem, together with other works, mentions, that it’s high time to restore Soviet Armenia’s anthem written by Khachaturian and make it the Republic of Armenia’s anthem.
During the concert evening Armen Hyusnunts performed not only as a conductor, but also as a soloist with the jazz cover of “the Lullaby” from the ballet “Gayane.”
Khachaturian International Festival is organized by the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra with the support of the RA Ministry of Culture.
